An IELTS adaptation, not a script

Many Part 2 answers stop early because the student runs out of structure, not vocabulary. STAR is an IELTS adaptation that gives your answer a path without making it sound memorised.

S — Situation

Set when, where, and who.

I’d like to talk about a small café I discovered during my first year at university.

T — Topic detail

It was hidden on a quiet street near campus, and what made it memorable was the atmosphere rather than the food.

A — Action

I started going there after afternoon classes, usually with two close friends. We would order coffee, talk about our week and sometimes study there until evening.

R — Reflection

Add why it mattered, how you felt, what changed, or why you remember it.

Looking back, I think I remember it so clearly because it became a kind of safe place during a stressful period of my life.

Extend naturally

Add a contrast
Add a small event
Add sensory detail
Add reflection
Mention what happened later

Avoid memorised templates

Avoid broad openings such as “There are many places in the world but today I am going to talk about…”. Start directly with your story.

Takeaway

Structure is not a script.

It is a path that helps you keep moving.
